…organic cotton [is the] story of innovation and discovery. It’s a story that is just beginning – one that clearly demonstrates the healthy alternatives to conventional agriculture that do not involve the use of harmful chemicals.
Seeds of Change:
The Organic Exchange
At Vida Textiles we believe furnishing your home means more than just choosing the colour that goes with the walls. It’s a dynamic process that ends with a colour and a striking pattern but begins with the soil, the water and the air, continuing through to the growers, manufacturers, suppliers and finally to you, the customer.
Vida Textiles strives to provide customers with a sustainable, organic and fair trade product – and here’s why:
It is kind to the earth & ourselves
Conventionally grown cotton is one of the most widely grown and chemical-intensive crops in the world. The simple act of growing and harvesting one pound of cotton fibre to make a T-shirt takes a toll on the earth’s air, water, and soil. Cotton cultivation uses approximately 11% of the world’s pesticides and approximately 25% of the world’s insecticides, some classified as toxic or carcinogenic. Buying conventional cotton means harsh chemicals like these can make their way into our homes and onto our bodies. That’s why Vida Textiles aims to provide you with an alternative range of organic cotton fabrics that look gorgeous and feel good whatever way you choose to look at it.
Organic cotton is grown without pesticides or insecticides from plants which are not genetically modified and uses production systems that replenish and maintain soil fertility, reducing the use of pesticides and fertilizers whilst strengthening and maintaining a biologically diverse agriculture.
IT REALLY IS SUSTAINABLE
All of this can be boiled down to one word – sustainability – it’s been the ‘IT’ word for the past eight years, and for good reason. However, some companies throw the word ‘sustainable’ at products which have nothing to do with sustainability, and everything to do with marketing. Vida Textiles has found its own meaning of the word so that there is no confusion and certainly no ‘green washing’.
Sustainability strives to create a system that can be supported indefinitely in terms of the environment, the economy and our social responsibility. Sustainability takes into account a product’s total lifespan and the impact that product has on our world.
True sustainability takes into account the source and renewability of the fibre, then choosing and using the correct process to turn these raw fibres into textiles. Other key aspects go hand in hand with this process; the working conditions of the people who produce the material are evaluated, and the materials’ total carbon footprint is calculated.
Vida Textiles believes that wherever possible good organic, sustainable textile manufacturing should work hand in hand with the fair trade movement – a partnership based on real communication, transparency and respect for workers’ rights.
IT LOOKS AND FEELS GOOD
The beautiful range that Vida Textiles brings to you not only looks good – as showcased by our range of stunning designs – but feels good as well. We hope that the fabrics we supply will inspire, bring happiness and make you think twice about your next purchase, whatever that may be.
